A Child or a Little Person?
When interacting with my children, I often catch myself asking this question: Am I interacting with a child or a little person?
Why I ask such a question? Well its because I often get swapped away into the belief of: My child is young and doesn’t know what is best for him. I am the parent. I know best what is better for him.
But then I find myself in a struggle with my child. Me convincing him what is better for him and him refusing and putting forward his preferred choice.
In such a context, I bring myself back to that question: What am I doing here? Am I interacting with a child or a little person?
Beleive it or not, our kids do know what is best for them. They have got their inner knowing, their built-in nature and their inner world.
Then after asking such reflective questions, I come back to my senses, look at my child in the eye and ask: If you don’t want this, then what is it you want?
I give him the choice and option to select that which suits him best in that moment of time. It could be choice of food, clothing, activity and whatever other tasks you want to do with your child.
So the next time you go into a struggle moment with your child, ask yourself repeatedly: Am I interacting with a child or a little person?
