Walking Experience with Traction
It is almost 2 weeks since my son got admitted in hospital for his spinal curves stretching treatment.
The treatment he received is called: Halo pelvic distraction. It is an external method to gradually correct the spinal curves.
After the surgery of fixing the traction fixtures on him, the doctors informed us those fixtures weigh 5 kg which is 50% of his body weight.
I realized at that point the challenge he will face to sit, stand and walk.
The 1st time we tried to mobilize him, he cried a lot and complained of pain around his pelvic area.
The 2nd time was with a young female physiotherapist who consistently encouraged him to walk and move his legs. At that time, we noticed the fear exceeded the pain for my son. He was more scared to walk with all those metals around him.
With time, to strengthen his confidence and belief, we would watch in YouTube people walking with those traction fixtures.
The 3rd time when the physiotherapist came, we made him sit initially. Then to standing where she would support his traction tools and I would hold him, he took very small baby steps beside his bed.
With days passing by, he developed more confidence and belief in himself.
At the end of every walking and exercise session, he was rewarded with a lollipop that would make up his day and lighten his mood.
To be honest with you, this experience is a mix of worry, sadness, joy, relief and happiness as well. While I feel sad to see him go through all those moments, I am also excited and happy to see him coming up slowly and gaining back his strength.
