Emotional Sensitivity, an Asset or a Curse?

When you are emotionally sensitive, you get feelings before the occurrence of the event. You get a sense something is just not right. You feel the other person is going through a circumstance. It is like you are a container for yourself and others too.

Honestly, this can be very tiring and overwhelming when you find yourself emotionally sensitive. Sometimes you just want to let go and live life in the moment and be present.

Now coming to this question: Emotional sensitivity, is it an asset or a curse? Well this depends on how you use it.

If you use your emotional sensitivity like a door mat, allowing every person to trigger you and accepting whatever the environment or culture throws at you, then yes, it is a curse. Because now you allow toxic to get into you and suck your energy out of you. You would be thinking of other people feelings. You would bump your head with others to get their satisfaction and approval. And you would be active on your feet all the time just completing tasks and satisfying your ego.

However if you approach your emotional sensitivity in a realistic and objective way, you would realize it as an inner compass. It would guide you which situations to fall into and which people to interact with. It helps you to put boundaries in your daily interactions. It tells you when you are ready and when you are not. It directs you to understand your inner world, what is going on inside you, what are your likes and dislikes and what closes you off and what opens you up.

In most cases, it is always our perception and approach towards it. That would shape whether it works for us or against us. I don’t say it is easy. Because I am emotionally sensitive too. I understand the drainage of energy happening because of this character. But give yourself compassion. You are such a kind, sweet, transparent and vulnerable person. Your emotions are there to guide you and enlighten your path. Be aware of them, understand their origin and be patient and kind with them. You don’t need to take action now because of them. Just observe them, process them and work with them step by step.
