Do it badly for perfectionist!

There is this TED talk video I watched recently. It is one of the best videos I recommend for someone with a perfectionist mindset. One of the recommendations in it that hit me hard is this quote: Do it badly anyways. She suggested if you struggle with starting or taking the lead in any project because you want things to be perfect, then just go do it badly. It speeds up your action taking and decision making process. Yes you will do mistakes. You will stumble along the way. But the learning that will take place also will be tremendous.

Perfectionist mentality, although it prevents you from doing mistakes, it keeps you stuck in one place. The thoughts like: You have to figure it out. You have to do it right or otherwise…. You shouldn’t do mistakes. People would laugh at you. It has to be right from the first time. These thoughts lock you and keep you stay in one position.

If we turn our heads to this statement: do it badly, for a moment, what do you think would happen? You would start sooner than later. You wouldn’t worry much because you know you would do mistakes anyway and learn from them. You would start taking charge of your life slowly. You would go out there and meet people and network. You would activate your business. You would do the things that you postponed.

This quote I also heard it from: Seth Godin who said: Show me your bad writings first. Then the good writings will follow later. That means when you do it consistently, you tell your brain: We are not going anywhere. We stay here. We keep doing and trying. Then your brain eventually after continuous consistent efforts from your side would say: She won’t give up. She won’t stop. We have to come up with something now. There is no escape here. Either we do it or she just won’t stop.

Be patient with yourself. Take it one step at a time. But consistently. No matter what your mind says. If you are not good enough, not skilled enough and not knowledgeable enough, its ok. Just go practice the information you learned badly. Learn from your mistakes. Modify and adjust. And see your life change and transform.
