Struggles in the Hospital

After my son’s halo pelvic distraction surgery, there are expected hurdles we are facing.

First is his feeding. He often refuses most of the foods I offer. Sometimes he would accept having chips, strawberry milk or boiled cauliflower.

When I try to convince him to eat other foods, he refuses. Even he screams and cries. The treatment he is getting and our prolonged stay in the hospital impacted his psychological state a lot.

But I noticed when giving him a choice what to eat, he tends to be more accepting and willing.

Second challenge is his movement. The halo ring and pelvic fixtures made him so uncomfortable in his movement. His sitting, standing and walking positions are a struggle at the moment.

However, the baby step idea works wonders for him. Currently he sits with support, stands on his legs with us holding him and taking very tiny slow foot steps. He cries, holds my hands and looks straight into my eyes with full of pain and discomfort. Doing this considering his very young age surprises me. He is amazingly courageous and brave.

Third is the challenge of entertaining him. At the moment, his uncle bought a mobile holder. So now he can watch his favorite cartoons in YouTube using my mobile phone while its fixed with the holder.

I can’t say this is easy. It needs a lot of patience, resilience and perseverance. The full support of the medical team, family and friends also eases the journey ahead.

Thanks to all who are in this journey with us.
